After the Combine occupation of Earth and joining the Resistance, Vortigaunts have also learned to speak at least one human language, which, in the English language version of the game, is predictably English (in some international versions of Half-Life 2, Vortigaunts speak the appropriate language for the country of the game's release, e.g: in the French language version of the game, the Vortigaunts speak French). Flux shifting cannot be understood by "those whose Vortal inputs are impaired" such as humans. It appears to involve a language with auditory components like human language as well as a sensory component exclusive to the Vortigaunts. Vortigaunts possess their own native form of communication which they refer to as "flux shifting". Vortigaunts "communicating" over a corpse in Black Mesa's Lambda Complex. In Half-Life 2, Vortigaunts make occasional references to their species' culture. Based on comments by the All-Knowing Vortigaunt, it seems that the species has endured slavery for many generations (" We have endured these chafing bonds for eons, yet a single moment of further servitude seems intolerable!" as he says) and enforced servitude appears to have formed the bedrock of Vortigaunt history and culture up to the events of the first Half-Life. In the original game, Vortigaunts were enslaved by the Nihilanth and used as workers and drone soldiers. īrief glimpses into the Vortigaunt culture can be gained by occasional speeches given by them in Half-Life 2, and in scenes during the original Half-Life. When faced with a superior enemy, Vortigaunts will often retreat, and if possible, group together with other Vortigaunts to form a stronger force. Throughout the Half-Life series, they can be seen in pairs or groups, and are capable of developing intelligent strategies. Vortigaunts are very intelligent and social creatures. Their feet, while previously ending in a single hoof-like claw, now take on a more avian appearance with three clawed digits.Īnother interesting feature of the Vortigaunts is that they can speak English fluently, albeit with a strange accent similar to African and some sort of speech impediment when using S's and R's. Instead of the hands ending in two digits, an opposable thumb can now be seen on each hand. In Half-Life: Alyx, Vortigaunts appear slightly different. Vortigaunts have a slightly hunched posture, and their faces are dominated by a large eye with a maroon Sclera and a Heterochromic red-yellow iris with a yellow pupil, surrounded by three smaller eyes. Vortigaunts have mottled green-brown skin, sharp teeth, and clawed hands. They are capable of using their arms to run like a quadruped, to cover large distances. However, Vortigaunts are also shown able to use their green energy through this third arm in Half-Life: Alyx. Apparently, this third arm is used for feeding, as both Vortigaunts and Alien Grunts are often seen bending over slain victims, feeding on them. This similarity, along with other shared features such as red eyes and digitigrade legs, is strongly suggestive of a common ancestry with other intelligent Xen life forms. This extra limb is a feature also found in other bipedal, sapient species from Xen, including the Alien Grunt and the Nihilanth. In appearance, Vortigaunts are somewhat humanoid, with two legs and two arms and an additional third arm protruding from the chest. 1.3 Communication and the "Vortessence".

This considers the common technology used by each brand’s high-end products to improve the overall Wi-Fi performance in homes or workplaces. It’s totally normal to need to do this every once in a while, but if you’re doing it every day, your router or modem may need to be repaired or replaced.ArrisVsNetgear modem router- How do they compare? Wi-Fi Technology Reboot your router and modem: If your router or gateway regularly drops connections or can’t access the internet at all, turn it off or unplug it, wait 10 seconds, and then turn it back on (do the same with your modem, if you have a separate one). The default passwords for each are usually printed on a label on the bottom of the router, and changing both reduces the risk of someone hopping on your network and using your internet or changing the settings without your permission. Change the default passwords: This means changing both the WPA2 or WPA3 passkey you use to connect new devices to the router and the administrative password you use to adjust settings and install firmware updates. If your router hasn’t received a firmware update in more than a year or two, it may be time to consider a replacement. Many recent routers install firmware updates automatically, but others don’t, so consult your router’s manual for instructions on how to check for updates and install them. Update the firmware: New firmware updates can improve your router’s performance, add features, and, most important, fix security problems.Try not to stick them inside a desk, behind your computer monitor, or way back in a corner. Make sure to position it well: A standalone router or gateway should sit as close to the center of your home as possible and out in the open, but all routers and satellites should have as few obstructions around them as possible (especially metal ones). But these common troubleshooting and maintenance tips should help you keep your network running as smoothly and securely as possible. Routers are complicated pieces of technology, and we can’t tell you everything you’d need to know to fix every networking problem you might run into. Troubleshooting and maintaining your router or gateway If you want to know more about the way your router does its job, this summary of common networking terminology is a good place to start. You can add more satellites to the network later if you’re still unhappy with the coverage in certain parts of your home or if you move to a bigger place. Unlike traditional Wi-Fi extenders, which don’t coordinate with your router, these mesh Wi-Fi systems are developed to work together they make sure that each of your devices is connected to the router or satellite that provides the best, strongest signal. If you have a DSL or fiber internet connection, your ISP is likely to require you to use its provided modem, which usually serves as a gateway and router as well, and the situation is more complicated if you also get phone service from your ISP. Typically you can save $5 to $15 on your monthly internet bill if you use your own modem and router instead of the equipment your cable provider offers. But you might need to replace a router because you want better coverage, because you’ve added more devices to your network and your old router isn’t keeping up, or because you want to take advantage of the latest improvements in Wi-Fi technology, which can change more often than modem standards do. Modem technology changes slowly, and you can usually use a modem for years until it breaks. You need the features of both a modem and a router, integrated or not, in order to have an internet connection for all of the devices in your home.įor people who have internet access provided by a cable company (and who don’t have gigabit or higher internet speeds), we recommend using a separate modem and router if possible. Often, your internet service provider will give you a device typically referred to as a gateway, a single box that serves as both modem and router, but these are still different technologies. A router is a box that lets all of your wired and wireless devices use that internet connection at once and allows them to talk to one another directly. A modem is a box that connects your home network to your internet service provider, or ISP. While both a modem and a router help your devices connect to the internet, they have separate (and complementary) functions. In " Son of Stan", a cat resembling Simon gets a gun and possibly shoots Steve-arino, although it isn't seen. Just when Steve thinks he is safe, Simon shows up as Roger's new wig and attacks Steve yet again. Simon appears to die at Steve's feet which moves Steve until he realizes it's a trap and Simon attacks him again and again, shaking off Steve's attempts to destroy Simon once and for all. At the cello recital, just as Lindsay Coolidge is prepared to fall for Steve, Steve sees Simon drag himself into the concert hall and rushes to his side. However, he has a dream in which he and Simon are playing complacently together but are then separated, which he takes as a sign. When Steve attempts to make amends, however, the cat, whom Steve has named Simon, attacks him again. When Steve brings Snot back to the accident scene, Snot says the cat was just frightened, and even manages to pet the cat without being attacked. The cat gets hit by a car and Steve wants to help it but it scratches his face and Steve basically tells. When a horrified Steve runs to the animal's side, he is clawed severely about the face. Throughout the afternoon, Gutierrez received first-class backing from Williams, as well as guitarist Will Matthews, bassist Steve Rigazzi and drummer Mike Warren, all from KC. In his heartfelt limning of “When I Fall in Love” accompanied by the wonderful Kansas City pianist Charles Williams, Gutierrez brought us into a shimmering romantic world whose enduring sentiments were at once personal and universal. The singer is also a compelling storyteller. His bluesy phrasing, razor-sharp intonation and breath-taking range that takes his rich baritone into the stratosphere with an impressive falsetto range are among his many assets. Gutierrez’s stylistic breadth works because of his superior musicianship. Putting his compelling voice and winning personality to the test with such standards as “Night and Day” and soul-funk classics like “The Look of Love,” the singer thrilled a full house at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center with a musical persona that was part Sinatra, part Stevie Wonder and all Ron Gutierrez. In fact, an admirable enterprise all round for the rosy-cheeked KCJO, and, one would hope, a harbinger of more memorable adventures yet to come. The studio recording is bright and clear, although the brass is a tad too distant at times (at least on my headphones), while the less-than-lavish 47:41 playing time is at least acceptable for a first effort. The KJO has a splendid vocalist in Lisa Henry, and she acquits herself well on “I Just Found Out About Love, “We’ll Be Together Again and “You Make Me Feel So Young, with sturdy support from the orchestra. Williams and tenor David Chael are out front on “Rumble, Mair (alto) and Doug Talley (soprano) on “‘A’ Train, Talley (tenor) and trumpeter Steve Molloy on “Corner Pocket, flutist Bob Long and flugel Bob Harvey on “Sunday, Williams, Talley and flugel Jay Sollengerger on “Jump. Deciding on a name for the album was easy, as most numbers were neatly wrapped up on Take One. After honing its chops during three highly successful concerts, the band entered KC’s Soundtrek Studio in November ’04 to establish a more permanent record of its burgeoning prowess.Keenly aware of the long and glorious tradition of big band jazz in Kansas City, the KCJO was eager for the challenge, and everything seemed to fall neatly in place. The debut recording by the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra marks the pinnacle of a dream come true for cofounders Jim Mair and Gene Hall-a repertory orchestra comprised of top-notch musicians from the Kansas City area, patterned after others around the country with local sponsors, a board of directors and national grants to lend financial support. You know your classes, of course, so I sorted the pranks below into “light jokes” and “slightly evil pranks.” Timing is everything, too: don’t make these go on too long!įor me, the fun in April Fool’s is having everybody laughing. I just prefer jokes that get the mood up instead of down… or you’re setting yourself up for a cranky group the rest of class! I also avoided any pranks that seem to be good news, and then it turns out to be fake. A student in tears over a fake test? Mmm, not for me. When it comes to April Fool’s, there are definitely some fun pranks you can pull in class.īefore we dive in, I’ll be honest: in perusing various April Fool’s articles, many jokes go farther than I’d go. We Spanish Teachers are already known for being pretty fun and animated.
However, since mnemonics work by giving the brain a “memory peg” to recall the facts, miraculously most children are able to remember the answer months and even years later!įor the classroom teacher, using mnemonics to teach the upper times tables for ALL STUDENTS, can shed weeks and even months from traditional classroom instruction time.įor the parents that discover their children are falling behind in math (as a result of not having their upper times tables mastered) utilizing this type of program is a great way to get their kids caught up quickly. This happens because the brain has not been told to retain that information. One day a student may know the math facts, then completely draw a blank the next. One of the most frustrating aspects of teaching the multiplication tables is the “I forget” factor. Many teachers, tutors and parents have found that incorporating mnemonics to achieve mastery of the times tables, cuts the time spent with traditional rote learning methods down to a fraction. In fact, an independent student published by Florida National University, showed an average of 81% increase in multiplication scores for children with learning disabilities, after they were taught the Times Tales® program. Utilizing a visual, mnemonic aid for quick recall of the upper, most difficult times tables, has proven high test score results for many children that are struggling learners. While many children with learning disabilities can grasp the concept of multiplication, they must have proficiency in recall of math facts in order to achieve successful math computations. If you are a parent that has been in the trenches of trying to help your child learn through traditional methods, you most likely have experienced the frustration of the ineffectiveness of the rote memorization method. A mnemonic, memorization system is a right brain learning technique that is geared perfectly for the visual learner. Using a mnemonic aid to learn the times tables is a proven highly effective way for children that struggle with learning disabilities such as, dyslexia and dyscalculia to master the times tables. RELATED POST: How Memorizing Multiplication Facts Made My Child’s Confidence Soar! 4 Reasons to Use Right Brain Math to Teach Multiplication to Struggling Learners #1 – It’s EFFECTIVE! If your child or student has dyslexia or dyscalculia, this might just be the answer to their math struggles!įor some students, the result of incorporating this unconventional, mnemonic system into learning multiplication is the difference between success and failure. This amazing, visual memory aide is so effective, that many children even as young as six years old (see video below) are able to quickly and effortlessly recall the answers to the upper times tables using the Times Tales® system of learning. Mnemonics are such a wonderful right-brain learning tool, it’s surprising it isn’t being taught in every classroom. Multiplication Chart for the Visual Learnerĭisclosure: This post was written by a member of the Trigger Memory team – founders of Times Tales, Pet Math and the Kids Chore Chart. However, this right brain, mnemonic-based system has proven greatly successful for children with learning disabilities such a dyslexia and dyscalculia. We mostly think of math as a left-brain learning modality. However, there is a mnemonic-based system called Times Tales® which utilizes visual cues to teach children how to recall upper math facts, quickly and effortlessly. How to Teach Multiplication to Students with Dyslexia & DyscalculiaĪlthough there are a few great programs geared for the dyslexic student (such as Susan Barton’s Reading & Spelling System), when it comes to right brain math, many struggling learners are left in the dark. There is an alternative to memorizing multiplication facts that will work for your child. However, strategies using right brain math are extremely effective for students with learning disabilities. Memorization through repetition simply does not work for most children who struggle with learning disabilities. If your child or student struggles with dyslexia or dyscalculia, you most likely have experienced the frustration and defeat that can result in teaching the times tables through traditional rote learning methods. Can you talk a bit about how these ideas shaped your book? And often these girls are performative – they want to smell nice for their crushes, and do beautiful things like picking berries and participating in beauty rituals. You quote your IRL grandma in the story called Manifesto saying “There is nothing more romantic than feeling a man’s eyes watching you and following you in the streets”. The feeling of being watched is a major theme in these stories. So many queer relationships have been erased from history, but I love how fiction allows us to write them back in. There are also stories about teenagers who aren’t yet aware of their own queerness, including one set in the 1950s. Writing short fiction meant I could include many different queer relationships: platonic, romantic, sexual, and all mixed up. This is pretty liberating from a writing perspective! There’s so much potential for drama, complicated power dynamics, and the absurd. Anything goes: they can invite their crushes strawberry picking rather than on a dinner date, they can flirt via public playlists, they can sleep with their best friends. They also don’t really have a pre-established romantic model to follow. Their actions aren’t determined by the patriarchy or heteronormativity. Most of the characters in Dream Girl are openly queer, and they aren’t repressed by it. There’s so much art about the struggles of being young and queer, but it can also be so fun! It was really important to me that this collection was a celebration of the communities that I exist in, where queerness is accepted and flourishing. Could you talk a bit about how queerness influences your writing? The book is full of sapphic images, innuendos, queer sex and secret codes. What if I’d actually got what I wanted, what if I did that thing I know I shouldn’t do, what if I could adopt a pet snake in New Zealand? This led to some especially bratty characters, bizarre situations, and sometimes the supernatural.įor me, one of the driving forces of the book is queerness. Some stories started with a “what if” from my own life. I’ve lived in Wellington pretty much my entire life, so inevitably Wellington was another big influence: the flats, the parties, the queer scene, the history of specific places. Dream Girl is one of many attempts to capture the fun, chaos and magic of these years. Throughout my teenage years and early twenties, I have often felt a kind of anticipatory nostalgia for all the good times we’re having, and even some of the bad times. The girls and the gays! I wanted my friends (you!) to feel seen and represented by these stories, and to give everyone else a little window into our world. Sinead Overbye interviews Joy Holley about writing Dream Girl, a book of short stories that uplifts the private lives of queer women, published earlier this year by Te Herenga Waka University Press.
